Entrepreneurship & Parenthood When Working From Home.

How does it all work?

Parenthood and Entrepreneurship are both beautiful things ,however if you cant balance the two can get pretty Stressful. Before you jump into thinking, oh I need to make a schedule...I would suggest making a list of your daily, weekly ,monthly and yearly goals and prioritize them based off of what the most important. Now that you have an idea of what you're really trying to achieve you can create your schedule and be sure to incorporate your breaks...YES BREAKS! You would take a break if you were working for someone, right? Plus your mental health is vital to yourself(It affects your overall health, family, friends ,fur babies and your business.

Now let's address the elephant in the room DISTRATIONS!! Because you're an awesome parent! You will be tempted to that through the day and tiding up will be the main culprit. You will begin to think about all the things in the world that needs to be done ,when it's time for you to work. Second to that will be guilt if your kids are home. Naturally you're gonna want to spend time and connect with them and that's normal. However to setting boundaries and set structure for you and your little ones it helps you both. I'm not saying don't spend time with your children's, its just that in order for this to be successful you have to set boundaries. And remember this also teaches your children to respect your space and work. Remember it's no different that a job other than you play or have a hand in every role of your business and consistency is key.

Balancing the roles of an entrepreneur and a parent can be a challenging yet rewarding journey. Working from home brings its unique set of demands and benefits, and it's essential to establish strategies that support both mental health and productivity. Here, we delve into the intricate dance of managing time, dealing with distractions, and maintaining well-being while juggling business and family life.

Mental Health Practices

As a parent-entrepreneur, I've found that mental health is the cornerstone of a sustainable work-from-home lifestyle. There were days when the lines between 'work' and 'home' blurred, leading to a sense of being overwhelmed. Implementing a morning routine that includes mindfulness exercises like meditation or journaling has been transformative. It sets a positive tone for the day and provides clarity and focus.

Your Foundation

  • Routine: Start your day with a routine that includes self-care practices.

  • Support System: Build a network of fellow parent-entrepreneurs for mutual support.

  • Professional Help: Don't hesitate to seek professional counseling if stress becomes unmanageable.

Time Management Strategies

I quickly realized that without a plan, both my business and family life suffered. I began using time-blocking techniques, dedicating specific hours to focused work and others to family activities. This helped me stay on track with daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly goals.

General Advice

  • Prioritize: Determine what needs immediate attention and what can wait.

  • Time-Blocking: Allocate time slots for work tasks, family time, and self-care.

  • Technology: Utilize apps and tools for scheduling and reminders.

Dealing with Distractions

With children at home, distractions are inevitable. I've found success in creating a dedicated workspace and setting clear 'work time' boundaries with my family. We also have a visual 'Do Not Disturb' sign that the kids understand.

General Advice

  • Clear Boundaries: Establish and communicate your work boundaries with your family.

  • Child-Friendly Activities: Have a set of activities ready to keep children engaged while you work.

  • Noise-Canceling Headphones: Invest in tools that help maintain focus.

Setting Boundaries and Creating Structure

In my experience, setting boundaries is about respect — for my time, my work, and my family's needs. We created a 'family calendar' where everyone's activities and work times are visible. This helps us respect each other's space and time.

General Advice

  • Visual Schedules: Use calendars and planners that are accessible to all family members.

  • Family Meetings: Regularly discuss and adjust boundaries and schedules as needed.

  • Consistent Routines: Keep morning and bedtime routines consistent for children.

The Importance of Breaks

Taking breaks is not just a luxury; it's a necessity for mental health and creativity. Short, frequent breaks throughout the day can prevent burnout and maintain productivity.

  • Pomodoro Technique: Work for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break.

  • Outdoor Time: Spend time outside to refresh your mind and body.

  • Hobbies: Engage in hobbies that have nothing to do with work or parenting.

Managing Work and Family Time Guilt

Guilt can be a constant companion for parent-entrepreneurs. I've learned to recognize that doing my best is enough and that quality trumps quantity when it comes to time spent with family.

General Advice

  • Quality Time: Make sure the time spent with family is engaging and meaningful.

  • Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself and acknowledge that you're doing your best.

  • Flexible Mindset: Accept that some days will be more family-focused and others more work-focused.

Fostering Respect for Workspaces

My children know that when the office door is closed, it's important work time but they still can text me or of course come in if its important. They also have their own 'workspaces' for homework or crafts, mirroring the respect for work areas.

General Advice

  • Physical Boundaries: Use physical cues to delineate workspaces.

  • Respectful Communication: Teach children about the importance of respecting work time.

  • Lead by Example: Model the behavior you want to see regarding workspace respect.

Consistent Business Practices at Home

Consistency in how you manage your business from home sets a professional tone and helps maintain focus.

  • Regular Hours: Keep to a set work schedule as much as possible.

  • Dedicated Space: Maintain a workspace that is solely for business use.

  • Professional Etiquette: Treat your home business with the same professionalism as you would in an external office.

Entrepreneurship and parenthood from home require a delicate balance. Taking the time to implement mental health practices, time management strategies, and methods to deal with distractions, you can create a structured environment that benefits both parents and children. Remember, it's crucial to set boundaries, take breaks, and foster a respectful atmosphere to thrive in both your personal and professional life.
