Freedom, Georgia: The Bold Black-Owned Utopia That’s Reclaiming Land and Power

When 19 Black families came together to buy nearly 100 acres of land in rural Georgia, they weren’t just dreaming—they were reclaiming. Reclaiming safety. Reclaiming space. Reclaiming power. This vision became known as Freedom, Georgia—a Black-led, woman-led initiative with its sights set on creating a self-sustaining, self-governed safe haven for generations to come.

In a time where many of us are exhausted by the dual burdens of systemic racism and economic exclusion, Freedom, Georgia feels like more than a movement. It feels like a revolution wrapped in real estate.
Born from Pain, Built with Purpose
The roots of Freedom, Georgia stretch back to the summer of 2020, in the wake of the killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd. The country was boiling over with protests, fear, and exhaustion. But for Ashley Scott, a realtor, and Renee Walters, an entrepreneur, the solution wasn’t just marching—it was movement. Physical movement. Away from cities where Black lives were unsafe. Into spaces they could own, shape, and control.
Together, the two women founded the Freedom Georgia Initiative and rallied 17 more families to purchase 96.71 acres of land near the small town of Toomsboro, Georgia—a quiet stretch of countryside about two hours from Atlanta.
Their mission was radical in its simplicity:
“To create a safe haven for Black families, where we can be healthy, whole, and free.”

What’s Actually There Right Now?
Let’s keep it real: this isn’t Wakanda (yet). The land is raw and mostly undeveloped—no rows of new homes or bustling markets (as of 2025). But that doesn’t mean nothing’s happening. The Freedom Georgia Initiative has been hosting “Big Black Campouts”, youth leadership events, planning infrastructure, and inviting professionals to help with development blueprints, road mapping, water access, and zoning.
What they do have is vision. Strategy. And acres of possibility.
They’ve documented much of their journey on their website and social media, including how they deal with contractors, permits, and county planning boards. This is the long game—and they know it.
Black Wall Street Vibes in the Rural South?
If the idea of an all-Black town sounds familiar, it’s because Black people have done this before. Just ask Eatonville, Florida, Mound Bayou, Mississippi, and Blackdom, New Mexico. These were self-built towns where Black excellence wasn’t the exception—it was the norm.
Freedom, Georgia taps into this legacy while looking to the future: a tech-savvy, eco-conscious, spiritually grounded Black community free from the shadow of white supremacy.
The founders aren’t just planning homes. They’re envisioning
Community gardens
Wellness centers
Economic development zones
Sustainable housing
Workshops in STEM, agriculture, and history
Cultural festivals celebrating Black joy
Sound familiar? It should. That’s a blueprint for healing.
The Media Attention—and the Critics
Of course, any Black-led effort that breaks the mold attracts both admiration and skepticism. National media outlets like CNN and The Guardian have covered Freedom, Georgia with curiosity and cautious support. But others question the feasibility: “Where are the homes?” “Is this really sustainable?” “Is it just a glorified camping trip?”
Here’s the thing: Black folks have never had the luxury of slow, graceful progress. Every step we take is under a microscope. And still, the founders of Freedom, Georgia push forward.
They’ve even pitched reality TV shows to showcase their development journey. Why not monetize the process and inspire others?
What the People Are Saying
“They doing what Black folks been talking about for years—buy land, build community, and create safety.” – @BlackFarmDreams “I stan them. PERIOD. This is what generational wealth and revolution look like.” – @TrapScholar “I just hope it don’t turn into another performative ‘Black utopia’ project with no real follow-through.” – @NeutralGrounds
Why Freedom, Georgia Matters Right Now
In a world where gentrification forces Black families out of their homes…Where Black women lead but are rarely supported…Where our traumas are profitized but our healing is ignored…
Freedom, Georgia is a radical act of self-love and self-determination.
It dares to say: We don’t need your permission. We just need the keys.
It reminds us that revolution doesn’t always look like protests or politics. Sometimes, it looks like paperwork, deeds, zoning permits, and blueprints. Sometimes, it looks like sitting on your own land and saying, “This is ours. We’re building here.”

Freedom, Georgia isn’t perfect. It’s a work in progress—like most beautiful things are. But what it represents? Ownership. Legacy. Power. Some form of Freedom without oppression, ya know.
And for a community of Black folks daring to imagine something different, that’s more than enough to root for.

And just like BLM, the FOUNDERS "Took the money and ran". NO Permeant Structures, NO crops and No one "thriving" there. Guess without Gov't Money, well, they just couldn't make it. On the other hand. Look up "Return to the Land" and all the things THEY did WITHOUT DONATIONS or Gov't money. Time to wake up to facts people.
