Micheal Ward, the BAFTA-winning actor known for his breakout role as Jamie in Netflix’s Top Boy, has found himself at the center of serious legal controversy. The 27-year-old rising star has been charged with two counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault, stemming from an alleged incident involving a single woman in January 2023.

According to the Metropolitan Police, the charges were filed after a thorough investigation and review by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). Ward is scheduled to appear before Thames Magistrates’ Court on August 28, 2025.
“Criminal proceedings are now active, and Ward is entitled to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there should be no commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings,” a spokesperson for the CPS stated.
A Rising Star in British Cinema
Ward's arrest comes at a time when his acting career is booming. After his acclaimed role in Top Boy, Ward went on to star in Blue Story, Small Axe, The Old Guard, and Sam Mendes' Empire of Light, which earned him a BAFTA Rising Star Award.
In 2025, he landed a major role in Ari Aster’s psychological thriller Eddington alongside heavyweights like Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, and Luke Grimes. The film premiered earlier this month, gaining early buzz as a potential awards-season contender.
Just weeks ago, Ward was also featured in Burberry’s Summer 2025 campaign, starring in a dreamy rom-com style short film that had fans swooning.
What Happens Now?
These charges have cast a shadow over Ward’s rising fame. He has not yet released a public statement, and it's unclear how the legal proceedings will impact his career moving forward. Legal experts stress that the presumption of innocence until proven guilty remains a cornerstone of the justice system.
Ward’s supporters and fans are understandably shocked. Meanwhile, advocacy groups are watching the case closely, citing the importance of both survivor justice and due process in high-profile cases.
